20 Simple Winter Hygge Activities for Children from Daisy Ducklings Childminding.

We have always spent our days in nature, appreciating the natural world around us, but since we became Hygge Accredited in 2022, we have slowed down even more. We spend our days being calm and mindful, practicing yoga, being in nature or exploring the provocations or invitations to play in our indoor environment.

Winter is such a magical season. We love nothing more than wrapping up warm and exploring, feeling the crisp cold air on our cheeks. Then coming back to our cosy home from home setting for a snuggle under a blanket and a warming hot drink.

Here we share some of our favourite Winter Hygge Activities to inspire you:
1. Winter Crate Shelfie

Wooden crates are very verstaile - use them to set up a little nook with a book, some fairy lights and nature and watch the children get stuck in.

 2. Shadow Play

Re-enact favourite stories in the dark with blankets, handmade stick puppets and a torch.

 3. Frozen Icicle Nature Decorations

 4. Winter Playdough

Making your own playdough is so satisfying, adding any ingredients, scents and colourings to suit the seasons. Make a pale blue frosty dough or a festive cinammon or orange dough.

5. Pinecone Robins

How cute are these little Robin's? Perfect for Winter story time. Add a little hanger and it makes a lovely tree decoration too. Use a fallen branch from your outdoor adventures to display them on indoors.

6. Winter Tree Leaf Weaving

Cut out a simple tree shape from cardboard, wrap rubber bands or string around and then go out for a walk, collecting winter treasures and weaving them into your tree.

7. Winter Display

Create an enchanting winter display to discover and explore.

8. Can you Make a Snowflake?

9. Orange pomander decorations

A lovely hygge winter craft with a beautiful scent.

10. Nature Art

Get outdoors with a roll of paper, some paints. The children can create whatever they like with nature - dip pine cones in the paint and roll them onto the paper - what patterns are created? Use leaves and sticks to make nature brushes. Paint with a feather. Use this artwork once dry to create cards and decorations.

11. Pine Cone Decorations

Use your painted pinecones from the previous activity and add some pom poms to decorate them. Stick them to a cork and hang these from a branch on your tree.

12. Winter Mud Kitchen Fun

Make a Winter soup or potion in the mud kitchen

13. Handcrafted Festive Trees

14. Upcycled cardboard tube Reindeers

How cute are these?!

15. Simple Snowman!

No snow? No worries! Use Instant snow to create your own outdoor art!

16. Weather and the Changing Seasons

Talk about the changing seasons and the weather that we see in winter.

17. Paper Snowflakes

An old classic!

18. Fun in a tray!

Such a simple idea but so many skills involved.

19. Make a winter Simmer Pot

20. Outdoor Storytime with Hot Chocolate

Such a Hyglig activity - story time doesn't have to be indoors. Take hot chocolate in a flask, cups, a book and some blankets outdoors...you could even venture to the park or the woods.
